Into the Quiet brings together contemplative guitar from acclaimed musician Justin Adams and Zen poetry and teachings from Henry Shukman — an intimate evening designed to guide you into the depths of meditative stillness through sound, word, and practice.
This special event will explore music of the desert, poetry of the heart and the wisdom of stillness.
We’ll offer a rare opportunity to experience the coming together of gorgeous contemplative guitar music from Justin Adams, a world-renowned musician, with Henry’s heartfelt poetry and zen teaching, to carry us into the depths of meditative quiet.
Justin Adams and Henry are old friends with a shared interest in contemplation and the arts that grow from it and express it. Together their offerings will create an evening of wonder, inspiration and stillness, supported by an intimate gathering of meditation, music and quiet.
This event is a coming together of poetry, music and meditation. We will follow a journey of stirring guitar music and heartfelt poetry into the heart of contemplative silence — the stillness that lies just behind words and melody, and is their true source.
In the course of the evening, we will gather for an experience of stillness, beauty and wisdom, all in the inspiring setting of St Mark’s Church, Islington, in the heart of London.

Thank you for creating this nourishing space. Our practice together revealed a place of deep authenticity, opening to ease and acceptance – which remains an anchor throughout my days since.

This was my first time sitting in shared stillness with so many others and it was absolutely magical.

I loved listening to Henry, the guided meditation and meditating with this sangha. The atmosphere had beautiful lightness and depths and I still feel it inside.
Henry teaches mindfulness and awakening practices to a wide range of students from all traditions and walks of life. Henry is an authenticated Zen master in the Sanbo Zen lineage, and is the Spiritual Director Emeritus of Mountain Cloud Zen Center. Previous to this, Henry had a career as an award-winning author and poet. His struggles and traumatic experiences as a youth, combined with a spontaneous awakening experience at 19, paved the way for Henry to develop a well-rounded approach to spirituality and meditation – one that includes love for self and the world as its foundation.

Justin Adams is a renowned guitarist, has played with Sinead O’Connor, Robert Plant and Brian Eno, and produced two albums for desert blues band Tinariwen. His soulful guitar work is steeped in the contemplative traditions of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern music.
